THE HUB was created so that people with chronic mental illness who were homeless or at risk of becoming homeless could have a place to go during the day. Prior to its inception, a number of the homeless were frequently trying to find shelter or could be found loitering in and around downtown businesses. Some would go to bars during the day, which was detrimental to their treatment. The HUB remains an important resource by offering shelter, recreational activities as well as support and guidance to those in need.
Since the HUB opened in 1992, our clients have benefited greatly from increased access to various community services and activities, such as employment placement, social integration, medical, and mental health treatment services.
Area business, law enforcement and the community in general benefit from reduced vagrancy and homelessness. With its various programs, the Hub also provides counseling and crisis intervention that can prevent costly emergency hospital visits. Vocational training at the Hub helps reinstate many people back into the workforce.
